Insomnia is one of the most common sleep problems today in our country. Perhaps it’s the stress of everyday living that gets to people. Maybe there is a medical condition or disease that contributes to a person’s lack of sleep. Each person’s insomnia symptoms are different from another’s. It is important to be seen right away if lack of sleep is affecting your daily life, work life, or energy levels to rule out more significant illnesses such as diabetes or anemia. If you are diagnosed with insomnia, there are ways to cope with it.
Some symptoms of insomnia include: difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently and being unable to fall asleep, waking up too early in the morning, feeling as if you haven’t slept after you have awakened, anxiousness, feeling sleepy, unstable or irritable. If you have any of the above symptoms, it’s important to talk to your doctor right away. Because insomnia can affect your daily life, you can be more prone to accidents, injuries, anxiety and depression.
When a patient has chronic insomnia symptoms, it generally means that they have suffered the above symptoms for most nights and over month or more. Chronic insomnia can be caused by medical illnesses, apnea, or psychological belief that there is a problem, biological issues, and lifestyle. Sleep insomnia symptoms are not routinely diagnosed because a sleep study is not usually recommended. This is because no real new information can be obtained and only confirms the patient’s complaint. It is best to find the underlying cause, rather to diagnose what is already evident. If apnea (absence of breathing) episodes seem to be the underlying cause, a sleep study is then done. This is not to diagnose the insomnia itself, but rather to diagnose why the breathing issues occur.
If apnea is not the cause, further tests are needed. The physician will ask the patient to keep a journal to record in each night as well. Having symptoms of insomnia do not always mean a physical diagnosis can be found.
